New Jersey Democratic Sen. Corey Booker said he “had no idea” his campaign communications staffer in Iowa Tess Seger called Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell a “sh**” after the Kentucky Republican responded to a question about his ancestors being slave owners.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Booker said when asked by SiriusXM Patriot 125 about his staffer’s tweet.

McConnell responded to a question about an NBC News report about his great-great-grandfathers who owned slaves. The Kentucky Republican said it puts him in the same position as former President Barack Obama.

NBC News reported that McConnell’s great-great-grandfathers, James McConnell and Richard Daley, owned at least 14 slaves in Alabama.

An NBC reporter at the Senate leader’s weekly presser Monday asked McConnell if this news perhaps made him reconsider his current position on reparations for blacks in the U.S.

“You know, I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama. We both oppose reparations, and we both are the descendants of slaveholders,” McConnell told reporters.
